What if someone tells you that the oldest Stonehenge is in Armenia and it is 3500 years older than the British Stonehenge, older than Karnak in France and Newgrenge in Ireland? Would you believe this?
The Stonehenge monument of Armenia is located some 200 km (124 miles) away from Yerevan. It consists of over 223 shaped stones, 84 of them have smooth angled holes of 4 to 5cm in diameter, directed to different points on the horizon. Many scholars believe that these unique stones were used as an ancient observatory.
In fact Armenians are one of the first to observe the Sun, Moon and stars. The fact that chips of transparent obsidian glass were found at the site spawned the theory that the pre-historic inhabitants of the region placed them inside the holes for magnification.
Some scientists believe that Carahunge (Stonehenge in Armenian) was built some five thousand years ago; others argue that it is 7,500 years old.
