If you have ever tasted a fresh apricot in Armenia, you’d sing about it too! And that’s just what Eva Rivas has done in her new hit single “Apricot Stone”. Eva has won the hearts of the Armenians and will be the 2010 Eurovision song contest representative for Armenia. It will be the fifth time Armenia is participating in the Eurovision Song Contest on May 27th.
But the significance of Apricots to Armenians is much deeper than its tastiness! The apricot was known in Armenia during ancient times, and has been grown here for so long that it is thought to be native. Its scientific name Prunus Armeniaca (Armenian plum) derives from that very assumption. “…this tree takes its name from Armenia, where it is native, and from here it was brought to Europe …” (De Poerderlé, written in the 18th century).
With Apricot season starting end of May/ early June, timing is great for the Eurovision song contest! We hope that this song will be “fruitful” and brighten the contest with its colorful and lively notes. Armenians will surely all be enjoying both the fruit and Eva’s performance. Viva la “Apricot Stone!”
